What To Do in A Medical Emergency when Travelling

What to do in a Medical Emergency when Travelling

When you are traveling, it is important to know what to do in a medical emergency.

There are many different types of medical emergencies that can occur while you are traveling. It is important to be prepared for them so that you can get the care that you need quickly and safely.

If you become seriously ill or injured while traveling, your travel insurance can assist you in receiving the treatment you require and returning home safely.

Medical travel insurance also helps to reimburse you for the treatments received, as well as to provide coverage for emergency transportation

An emergency medical evacuation, which is carried out by air, plane, or ambulance, may be considerably more costly. In certain countries around the world, an emergency medical evacuation can cost thousands of dollars. Fortunately, insurance can arrange and pay for medically essential emergency transportation.

Most of the time, you are eligible for free or low-cost emergency medical care if you have a medical problem. Travel insurance can help ensure that you receive high-quality treatment for a medical emergency without having to pay out of pocket.

It is dependent on your destination and the specific nature of your emergency. However, you should be aware that any care you obtain will be 100% your responsibility.

If you get sick or injured overseas and don’t have insurance, you may have to

  • Be unable to choose a hospital or clinic that will provide you higher standard of care
  • Pay cash upfront before receiving medical treatment
  • Accept being refused treatment if you are unable to pay
  • Manage your own transport and accommodation arrangements during your treatment and recovery

Having a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place can give you the peace of mind that, in the event of an emergency, you will be covered financially so that you can focus on getting well.

At Allianz Travel, we provide unlimited emergency transportation coverage* following a medical emergency (including COVID-19 diagnosis, or other pandemic or epidemic) while on your trip. This includes emergency local emergency transportation and medical repatriation to Singapore if needed.

Call the emergency number in an unforeseen situation. 9-1-1 is a good option, but it isn't always accessible. In Europe, 1-1-2 is used instead of 9-1-1.

If your sickness or injury is not severe, you can go to an urgent care clinic. The staff at these clinics can provide basic medical services and they're often cheaper than emergency rooms.

If your sickness or injury is severe, then you'll need to go to the emergency room. The sooner you're seen by a doctor, the better.

After you've been diagnosed, the doctor will treat your sickness or injury. This may include medication, surgery, or therapy.
For urgent, non-life-threatening problems, call +1 804-281-5700 from anywhere in the world. We'll handle the specifics to get you the care you want as soon as possible if you can provide us with a little information.

If you are in a hospital while in overseas, we can arrange and pay for you to return to your home country.

We'll work with your primary care physician and health insurance to choose the best transport plan if your illness demands that you be taken to another medical facility.

Allianz Assistance can supply and pay for any medical assistance you require (up to the limits of your travel insurance policy) if you need an air ambulance, a medical escort, oxygen, antibiotics, or other medical care.
